Let’s Find Home: Charlotte Neighborhood of Highland Creek

In 2016, my husband and I bought our home in Highland Creek. The house was built in 2008, so we became the second owners. By then, the neighborhood was already well established, which was exactly what we were looking for.

We chose Highland Creek for a few clear reasons. It was, and still is, one of North Charlotte’s most desirable communities. It fit what we needed as a growing family. My husband is an assistant principal, and before we made an offer, we spent a lot of time looking into the feeder school pattern. We liked what we found. We also loved the amenities and how close the neighborhood is to everything else in this part of Charlotte.

Before we bought our home, we did something I still recommend to buyers today. We drove through the neighborhood at different times of day before making an offer. Morning, evening, and a weekend afternoon. We wanted to see what it actually felt like to live here, not just what it looked like during a showing. Every time we came through, it felt safe, welcoming, and like a place where people genuinely enjoyed living. Nearly ten years later, that has proven true.

If you’re researching Highland Creek because someone mentioned it, or because it came up while you were searching neighborhoods in Northwest Charlotte, I want to give you the perspective of someone who has lived here for almost a decade.

What Highland Creek Is

Highland Creek is one of the largest master-planned communities in North Carolina. It sits in Northwest Charlotte, right where Mecklenburg County meets Cabarrus County.

One thing that’s worth knowing before you fall in love with a particular home is that the county line runs directly through the neighborhood. Two homes just a few doors apart can be in different counties, which affects property taxes and school assignments.

It isn’t a small detail. It’s one of the first things I check for clients considering a home here, and it’s something I always encourage buyers to verify before getting attached to a particular section of the community.

Daily Life in Highland Creek

Highland Creek was built with resort-style amenities, and almost ten years later, they are still a big part of everyday life. The community includes five swimming pools, tennis courts, basketball courts, a fitness center, and a championship golf course.

The amenities are great, but what I appreciate most is how people actually use them.

On most evenings, you’ll see neighbors out walking through the community. During the summer, the pools are full of families. On weekends, there’s always activity around the golf course, whether people are playing or simply enjoying being outside.

It’s an active neighborhood, but it never feels busy in an overwhelming way.

Location Matters

One of Highland Creek’s biggest advantages is its location.

Within a short drive, you have Concord Mills, Charlotte Motor Speedway, UNC Charlotte, the Wells Fargo campus, Lake Norman, Charlotte Douglas International Airport, and Uptown Charlotte.

I often tell relocating buyers that Highland Creek is worth considering if they’re deciding between Huntersville, Mooresville, and Concord.

Each of those areas offers something different. Highland Creek gives you convenient access to all three, which is one of the reasons it’s remained such a popular community over the years.

Is Highland Creek Right for You?

Highland Creek is a great fit for buyers who want an established neighborhood instead of a brand-new community that’s still under construction.

It’s also a good fit for people who know they’ll use amenities like the pools, fitness center, golf course, and walking trails, since those are all supported through the HOA.

At the same time, it isn’t the right neighborhood for everyone, and that’s okay.

One thing I’ve learned as a Realtor is that every Charlotte neighborhood serves a different lifestyle. That’s why I never recommend a community until I understand what someone wants their day-to-day life to look like.
